Q: What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

A: Jiu Jitsu is a core art consisting of grappling, wrestling, submissions and control.

 

Q: What makes BJJ different from other martial arts?

A: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a form of ground fighting unlike any other martial art.  It encompasses grappling, judo, wrestling and submission techniques. Students use position, leverage, and technique to dominate control and execute submissions.

 

Q: Is BJJ only for MMA fighters or people who want to compete?

A: No.  BJJ can be practiced for getting in shape, building confidence or for self-defense.  If interested, students can train to compete.

 

Q: What are the fitness benefits of BJJ?

A: The Jiu Jitsu workout is like no other.  Students use full body movements throughout each class that both burn calories and build muscle.  It improves flexibility, speed, strength, endurance and more!

 

Q: As a beginner, will I be lost amongst other students who have more experience than I do?

A: No.  Although some students are at different levels, each is encouraged to learn at their own pace. Our instructors will work with each student to ensure his or her needs for growth are met.

 

Q: Do I have to be in shape to be able to do BJJ?

A:  Regardless of your fitness level, BJJ will help you get in shape or keep you there.

 

Q: How long until I can get a black belt?

A: Black belts typically take between 8-15 years, training an average of 3-4 times per week.

 

Q: Is BJJ safe?

A: At Sakura BJJ, safety is the number one priority.  Accidents may happen, but it is expected of all students to behave responsibly and be serious during training as carelessness can result in injury.
